# Publishing a listing

> Turning items you already have into a Reddit post.

**New post** is at the top right of the hub. Tick items, and Trade Post writes
the post.

The listing is a real Reddit post under your own account. It is yours, anyone
can report it the way they report any post, and you delete it the way you delete
any post.

## The sequence

    Only items marked available can be listed. Anything traded, or already in an
    open trade, is left out. You can add photos to an item without leaving the
    screen.

    It carries the count, so it reads **Continue with 3 items**. If something is
    blocking the listing the button says that instead.

    Everything the items cannot supply: your region, an optional note about the
    post, and what you are looking for. Your post title is at the top of the
    screen and rewrites itself as you type.

  <Step title="Press Post to r/yoursubreddit">
    The one button in the flow that posts, and it says so.

  <Step title="Give Reddit permission">
    Reddit asks whether Trade Post may post as you. It asks here, immediately
    before the post goes up, rather than before you start typing. Refusing ends
    the publish and nothing is posted. Nothing you typed is lost either, so you
    can press the button again.

Leaving the composer discards your ticks. Going back from the details step does
not: your ticks and everything you typed are both still there. Add a missing
item from inside the composer rather than going back to the Inventory tab.

Above the items is a link to your subreddit's own rules. Photo counts, the title
format and what may be listed at all are set per subreddit, so that page is the one
that says what will actually be accepted here.

## The details step

Your post title sits at the top and rewrites itself on every keystroke. It is
the same title the post will carry. You cannot edit it there; you edit the two
fields under it.

The two fields that reach the title come first, directly under it. The two that
are body only follow.

**Region** checks itself as you type. If what you entered does not match your
subreddit's format, the message under the box says which shapes it accepts, and
the Post button says the same thing until you fix it. Nothing you typed is
cleared.

**Wants (title)** is a checklist where your subreddit closed the list, and a
comma-separated box where it did not. The box opens holding the want your title
would carry anyway, so you are editing a real default rather than filling in a
blank. Clear it and the title uses the same word again. See

**Listing note** is where shipping and payment terms go, along with whether you
will break the lot up and anything else about the post as a whole. Up to 1,000
characters, counted under the box. It is not saved between posts, so you type it
each time.

**Wants (body)** is prefilled from your saved [want list](/traders/wants).
Editing it here changes this post only. Your saved list stays as it is.

## The title

Trade Post generates it. With a region of `US-NY` and the usual defaults:

One item names its condition and price. Several are listed until the title runs
out of room, then counted. The `[W]` half reads `Offers` when your subreddit
suggests nothing and you leave the box as it opened, and a priced single item
drops that word rather than printing a price and a shrug.

Reddit caps a title at 300 characters. Wants are shortened first, then items fall
back to `+N more`. **Nothing is lost.** The post body carries both lists in full
whatever the title had room for.

Your subreddit's [listing format](/moderators/listing-format) sets the tags and
the options.

## What stops a publish

The composer refuses before the post exists, so a listing that breaks your
subreddit's rules never reaches the queue. The button says which rule.

On the details step the line under the Post button does the same job. A missing
or malformed region, a note over its character cap, or a want list over its
limit each name themselves there, and the button stays off until it is fixed.
Everything you typed stays where it is.

The same line covers your items. If something changes them while you are typing,
say an offer you accept in another tab, the button turns off and says which rule
it now breaks. Go back to the items, fix it, and come forward again. Your typing
is still there.

## Editing and taking down a listing

There is no edit or close button here. Edit the body or delete the post on
Reddit the way you would any other.

Your listing note is fixed once the post is up. Trade Post has no way to change
it, so correcting it means editing the post body on Reddit, with the warning
below in mind.

  Editing an item's name, description or photos in Trade Post rewrites the body
  of every live listing advertising it. Hand-edits you made to that body on
  Reddit are replaced. Change the item, or change the body, but expect the item
  to win.

<Warning>
  **Deleting the post erases its Trade Post record, its offers and its trades.**
  The post is what everything else hangs on. Delete it only when you are done
  with the negotiations under it.

Marking an item **traded** is the other way. It shows as traded on every post
advertising it, without touching any of them.

## Notes

* **An item can sit on several live posts at once.** See
  [Inventory](/traders/inventory#an-item-on-more-than-one-listing).
* **A listing keeps its own copy of the items it advertises**, so it still
  renders if you later delete one.
* **Every photo on the listing is sent to Reddit with the post.** The body names
  the first forty and then says how many more there are; the post itself shows
  them all.
